Inverness stands where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth, with a red sandstone castle on a bluff above the river and the wooded Ness Islands, linked by footbridges, a short stroll upstream. The city is the capital of the Highlands and the northern end of the Great Glen, the fault valley that runs south-west to Fort William. The Victorian cathedral of St Andrew stands on the river bank.
Loch Ness, long and deep and home to the legend of its monster, begins just south-west of the city, with the ruins of Urquhart Castle on its shore. Culloden Moor, east of the city, is the battlefield where the Jacobite army was defeated in 1746, and nearby Clava Cairns are Bronze Age burial mounds among standing stones. Dolphins swim at Chanonry Point on the Black Isle, and the Cairngorms, Skye and the north coast are all within reach.
Cullen skink, a smoked haddock soup, haggis with neeps and tatties, Highland venison and Scottish salmon feature on menus, along with shortbread and malt whisky from distilleries in Speyside. In June and July the evenings stay light until very late.
