Liverpool grew into a major world port in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Pier Head still shows it: the Royal Liver Building and its two neighbours, together called the Three Graces, stand side by side above the Mersey. Behind them lies the Albert Dock, a former warehouse complex of red brick and iron columns that now holds galleries, shops and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Liverpool Cathedral, the Anglican cathedral of red sandstone, is the largest in Britain, and the modern round Metropolitan Cathedral sits at the other end of Hope Street. The Walker Art Gallery and the World Museum are on William Brown Street, and Mathew Street keeps the music of the Beatles alive. Crosby Beach, where Antony Gormley's cast-iron figures look out to sea, and the ferry across the Mersey are short trips, and Chester is close.

Scouse, a stew of lamb or beef with potatoes and carrots, gave Liverpudlians their nickname, and it is served with pickled red cabbage or beetroot and crusty bread. Pubs, music venues and football fill the evenings, and the city has one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe. The weather off the Mersey is changeable, and showers can come in any month.
