Kejimkujik National Park, known locally as Keji, protects a quiet landscape of lakes, slow rivers and mixed forest in the interior of south-western Nova Scotia. A separate coastal section, Kejimkujik Seaside, protects a rugged shoreline of beaches and headlands on the Atlantic. The park is also a National Historic Site of Canada because of the long Mi'kmaw use of the area.
The Mersey River and a network of lakes make the park a canoe and kayak destination, and rock carvings made by the Mi'kmaw people along the river are protected as part of the cultural landscape. Loons, otters, beavers and white-tailed deer live here, along with the endangered Blanding's turtle, and the park is a Dark Sky Preserve, with starry skies at night.
Lobster, chowder and Annapolis Valley apples are the local food, and fiddleheads, the young shoots of ferns, appear in spring. The maples turn red in autumn, and the lakes are warm enough for swimming in summer.
