Saint John stands at the mouth of the Saint John River, where the river meets the Bay of Fundy and its tides, among the highest in the world. At Reversing Falls, the incoming tide pushes through a narrow gorge and for a time forces the river to run upstream. Loyalists arrived from the United States in 1783, and Saint John was incorporated as a city in 1785, one of the oldest in the country.
Uptown, the City Market, under a roof shaped like an upturned ship's hull, dates from 1876. Carleton Martello Tower, begun in 1812 to defend the harbour, looks over the water, and Irving Nature Park has trails along the coast. East of the city the Fundy Trail Parkway follows the cliffs, and St Martins has sea caves and covered bridges. A ferry crosses the bay to Digby in Nova Scotia.
Dulse, a salty seaweed, and fiddleheads, the young shoots of ferns, are eaten locally, with lobster, scallops and chowder on harbour menus. Fog often rolls in off the bay in summer, and the water stays cold; July to September is the warmest stretch, while autumn brings colour to the hills.
