Experience the best of Dundee

Dundee sits on the north shore of the Firth of Tay, below the green hill of Dundee Law. The waterfront has been rebuilt around V&A Dundee, a museum of design whose angled walls recall a ship's hull, and beside it is RRS Discovery, the research ship built in the city for Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition. Verdant Works, a former jute mill, recalls the industry that employed much of the city.

The city was long known for jute, marmalade and newspapers, and its comic publishing gave the world characters such as Desperate Dan, whose statue stands in the High Street. Broughty Ferry, a seaside suburb to the east, has a castle and a sandy beach. St Andrews, Glamis Castle and the seaside town of Arbroath all lie close by.

Dundee cake, a rich fruit cake topped with almonds, and Dundee marmalade are the city's classic foods, with fresh seafood from the east coast and the meat pies called Forfar bridies from the county next door. The Tay Road Bridge carries traffic to Fife. The city is drier than much of Scotland, and its waterfront gets long summer evenings.
