Experience the best of St. Andrews

St Andrews is a medieval coastal town in Fife, the home of golf, with Scotland's oldest university, a ruined cathedral and castle, and long sandy beaches.

St Andrews stands on the east coast of Fife, on a rocky shore beside the North Sea, and is known throughout the world as the home of golf, which has been played on the Old Course since the fifteenth century. The University of St Andrews, founded in 1413, is the oldest in Scotland and among the oldest in the English-speaking world, and students in red gowns are a familiar sight in the stone streets.

The ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once the largest church in Scotland, and the tall St Rule's Tower stand near the cliffs, and the ruined castle sits on the rocks beside the sea. West Sands, a long beach, is where the running scene in the film Chariots of Fire was shot. The East Neuk fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem lie to the south-east along the coastal path, and Dundee is across the Tay.

Fresh seafood, haddock and chips, shortbread and local ice cream are the town's fare, with East Neuk lobster and crab served in harbour cafés. A sea mist called the haar often drifts in from the North Sea in spring and summer, and the brightest weather comes between May and September.
