  • 5Great Basque Cooking

A great class for learning classic Basque recipes. Mattin was super knowledgeable, helpful and made the experience very enjoyable.

  • 5Basque flavor is built differently.

The Chef, Mattin knew his stuff really well and did a good job demonstrating. He went over basic knife skill which to me was a complete waste of time (I think most people signing up for a cooking class already know this safe methodology). The other aspects of the class were spot on. My only disappointment comes from Basque cooking technique not from the class. It turns out this style of cooking uses blending food flavors for piquing the taste buds much more than using spices; the only spice used was salt. How to blend the flavors to accomplish this would be far too broad a subject for this 3-hour class, but I got enough information from the class to want more. Basque pintxos food is built on and highlights this technique but you cannot learn it from eating them unless you have some understanding of this in the first place. Since we had pintxos before the class it made me aware of this and we did spend 2 more meals eating pintxos to get a better understanding of the mixing and highlighting flavors we saw in the brief discussion of pintxos in the class. I highly recommend the class, but don't expect to learn how to build Basque flavors; that is a much more complex subject.

  • 5A great evening activity while in San Sebastián

Lots of fun with lovely food a drink! Albert was a fantastic teacher, it was great to have a go at making and drinking things we'd been trying in the pintxos bars.

  • 4Basque Cooking Experience

We had a good time, but I think we were expecting to do a little more cooking, we only cooked two dishes. We were very excited to make the Basque Cheese Cake and it was delicious and to put together the Gildas, the other things had been done before we arrived. Luckily it was only the 3 of us. Thank you

About San Sebastián

San Sebastián, or Donostia, is a Basque seaside city around a shell-shaped bay, with a golden beach, a hilltop fort and a pintxo scene known across Spain.

San Sebastián curves around La Concha Bay, a near-perfect shell-shaped inlet with a white-railed promenade and a sheltered city beach. Monte Urgull guards the east end with an old fort, and Monte Igueldo, at the west end, has a funicular and a viewpoint. The Parte Vieja, the old town, was rebuilt after the fire of 1813 and is packed with bars and a baroque basilica.

Top-ranked sights in San Sebastián: San Sebastian Old Town (Parte Vieja Donostiarra), La Concha Beach (Playa de la Concha), Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constitución).
