William Shakespeare was born in Stratford in 1564 and is buried at Holy Trinity Church beside the River Avon. His birthplace on Henley Street is a half-timbered house, and Hall's Croft, Nash's House and the gardens of New Place stand close by in the old town. Anne Hathaway's Cottage, a thatched farmhouse in the village of Shottery, and Mary Arden's Farm at Wilmcote complete the Shakespeare family sites.
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre face the river, where swans glide past Bancroft Gardens and the canal basin. Tudor and Georgian buildings line the main streets, including Harvard House, built in 1596 for the grandfather of John Harvard, who gave his name to the American university. Warwick Castle, Charlecote Park and the Cotswold villages to the south, such as Chipping Campden, are within a short drive.
Afternoon tea, pub lunches and Warwickshire ales suit a day among Tudor timbers, and the town's markets sell local cheese, honey and bread. Shakespeare's birthday is celebrated each spring with a procession through the streets, and the river meadows are greenest from late spring to early autumn.
