Experience the best of Rabat

Rabat is Morocco's calm Atlantic capital, with a hilltop kasbah, a medieval tower, a royal mausoleum, Roman ruins at Chellah and a river-mouth beach.

Rabat lies on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, facing its twin city Salé across the water. The Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th-century fortress with blue-and-white lanes and an Andalusian garden, stands on the cliff above the river mouth. Nearby, the Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of a mosque begun in 1195, surrounded by rows of broken columns. The mausoleum of Mohammed V, guarded by horsemen, stands opposite.

Chellah, a walled necropolis of the 14th century built over the Roman town of Sala Colonia, has ruins of a forum and a triumphal arch, and storks nest on its walls. The medina has souks of carpets and crafts. Rabat is a government and diplomatic city, with the Royal Palace and ministries on wide avenues, and the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art shows Moroccan artists. Casablanca is about 90 kilometres south-west.

Moroccan home cooking is on every table: tagines of lamb with prunes or chicken with preserved lemon, couscous on Fridays, harira soup, pastilla, and mint tea poured from a height. Fresh sardines and other Atlantic fish are grilled near the port, and Rabat is known for its rugs. Atlantic breezes keep the summers moderate.
