Agafay is a stretch of rocky, semi-desert plateau south-west of Marrakech, between the city and the High Atlas Mountains. Unlike the Sahara, it has few sand dunes: the ground is flat, stony and pale, broken by low hills and dry riverbeds, and in winter the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas rise to the south.

Berber villages stand in folds of the hills, and the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir, a large lake, lies nearby, a bright stretch of water in the dry land. The Ourika Valley and Imlil, from which Mount Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, is climbed, lie in the mountains to the south-east. Camel tracks and tented camps are scattered across the plateau.

Tagine of lamb with prunes or chicken with preserved lemon, couscous, mint tea and bread baked in village ovens are the standard meals, and tanjia, meat cooked slowly in a clay jar, is a Marrakech speciality. Summer is very hot and winter nights are cold, so the comfortable months are March to May and October and November.
