The medina climbs from the port to the kasbah, where the old sultan's palace, Dar el Makhzen, holds a museum with views across the Strait of Gibraltar. The Grand Socco and Petit Socco were long the meeting points of the city, and their cafés recall Tangier's decades as an international zone that drew writers, musicians and artists.
Clifftop cafés serve mint tea on terraces above the strait, and the American Legation Museum occupies the first property the United States owned abroad. Along the coast, Cap Spartel marks the northwestern tip of Africa, and the Caves of Hercules open onto the Atlantic through a rock window said to resemble the outline of the continent.
Seafood is excellent in the port, along with harira soup, tagines and fresh bread from neighbourhood ovens. Spring and autumn are pleasant, and in summer the levanter wind sweeps through the strait, keeping the city breezy while the beaches fill. The blue town of Chefchaouen, the medina of Tetouan and the mural-painted seaside town of Asilah are rewarding trips.
