Tinerhir lies in south-eastern Morocco, where the Todra river leaves the High Atlas and waters a green palm grove that runs for several kilometres through the dry landscape. Mud-brick villages and kasbahs stand among the date palms, olive and almond trees and small terraced fields. The town is a market centre for the Amazigh communities of the valleys, and its old quarter and kasbah are built of earth.

North of town, the Todra Gorge narrows between red limestone cliffs more than 150 metres high, with a clear stream at the bottom, and is a noted place for rock climbing. The Dades Gorge and the rose-growing valley around Kelaat M'Gouna lie to the west, the dunes of Merzouga to the south-east, and the mountains of Jebel Saghro to the south. Carpets, silver jewellery and woven goods are sold in the souks.

Tagines of lamb or chicken with olives, couscous on Fridays, round loaves baked in communal ovens and dates from the valley's palms fill the local table, and sweet mint tea is poured for guests. Summers are very hot, winter nights can be cold with snow on the High Atlas peaks, and spring and autumn are the pleasant seasons.
