Merzouga lies in the south-east of Morocco, not far from the Algerian border, at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange dunes that rise as high as about 150 metres. The village is a scatter of flat-roofed mud-brick and concrete houses, with guesthouses and kasbah-style hotels set along the dune edge. The surrounding landscape is stony desert, scattered with oases and dry riverbeds.
Camel treks carry visitors into the dunes for sunset and sunrise, with overnight camps beneath clear stars, and sandboarding and quad-bike rides are other options. Nearby, Khamlia is a village of Gnawa musicians, descendants of people from west Africa, who play drums and iron castanets. Dayet Srji, a seasonal lake that fills after rain, attracts flamingos. Rissani, an old market town, and Erfoud, known for fossil-bearing stone, lie to the north.
Medfouna, a Berber bread stuffed with spiced meat and onion and often called Berber pizza, is a speciality of the area, along with tagines cooked in clay and dates from the Tafilalet oasis. Mint tea is served in every tent. Summer days are fiercely hot, and winter nights turn cold.
