The city's broad crescent of sand stretches for miles, backed by a seafront promenade lined with cafés and restaurants. Above it, the hilltop ruins of the old kasbah, Agadir Oufella, give sweeping views across the bay, with the national motto spelled out in giant Arabic letters on the slope beneath.

Agadir was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1960, so its centre is modern, but the Souk El Had is a vast traditional market of spices, produce and crafts, and the fishing port serves grilled sardines at simple stalls. Medina Polizzi, a re-created traditional village, displays local craftsmanship, and the surf villages of Taghazout and Tamraght lie just up the coast.

Inland, the Souss-Massa National Park shelters rich birdlife, and the argan forests produce the oil used in local cooking and cosmetics. The palm-lined gorge and pools of Paradise Valley and the walled town of Taroudant make good outings. The climate is mild and sunny almost all year, with warm summers cooled by the ocean and soft winters that draw visitors from colder places.
