Jemaa el-Fnaa, the great square at the centre of the medina, changes character through the day, from juice sellers and snake charmers in the morning to smoke-wreathed food stalls and musicians after dark. The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque rises nearby as the city's landmark, and the souks spread north in a warren of lanes selling leather, lanterns, carpets and spices.

Within the walls lie the Bahia Palace with its painted ceilings and courtyards, the Saadian Tombs, the ruins of El Badi Palace and the intricately carved Ben Youssef Madrasa. Outside them, the Majorelle Garden glows cobalt blue among cacti, and the Menara and Agdal gardens offer olive groves and pools with mountain backdrops. Many visitors stay in riads, traditional houses built around a shaded courtyard.

Tagines, couscous, slow-cooked tanjia and mint tea poured from a height anchor the local table. Spring and autumn bring warm days and cool nights, and in winter the snow-capped High Atlas makes a striking backdrop to the palm groves and red walls. The High Atlas villages, the Ourika Valley, the stony Agafay desert and the coast at Essaouira all make memorable trips out.
