Ouarzazate lies on a high, dry plain south of the High Atlas, where the road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass from Marrakech meets the valleys that lead on to the Draa and the Dades. The Taourirt Kasbah, a sprawling mud-brick fortress of the Glaoui family, stands beside the old town, with painted ceilings and narrow rooms. The wide avenues of the newer town are quiet, and the Atlas Mountains make a snow-capped backdrop in winter.
Ouarzazate is the film town of Morocco, with studios on the edge of the plain. The fortified village of Aït Benhaddou, a World Heritage ksar of red earth towers about thirty kilometres away, has appeared in many films. The palm grove of Skoura with its old kasbahs, the Dades and Todra gorges to the east, and a large solar power complex on the plain are all within a day.
Local tables serve tagines of lamb with prunes or almonds, couscous and bread baked in village ovens, with fresh dates and almonds from the oases and mint tea. Saffron comes from villages further west, and the Valley of Roses at Kelaat M'Gouna, to the east, celebrates its rose harvest each spring. Winters are cool and summers fiercely hot.
