Experience the best of Lyon
Lyon, where the Rhône and Saône meet, is a Roman and Renaissance city of covered passageways, long called the capital of French cooking.

Lyon spreads across two rivers and two hills. On Fourvière hill, the white basilica looks down over the Roman theatres of Lugdunum, once the capital of Gaul, while the Renaissance old town below has narrow streets and covered passageways, the traboules, that silk workers used to carry cloth. The old town and the slopes of Croix-Rousse, the silk weavers' hill, are part of the UNESCO-listed historic site.
The Presqu'île, the peninsula between the rivers, holds Place Bellecour, a vast square, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in an old abbey. At the southern tip, the Musée des Confluences stands where the two rivers join, and the Parc de la Tête d'Or is a large city park with a lake. Beaujolais vineyards begin north of the city, the medieval village of Pérouges is within an hour, and the Alps rise a couple of hours to the east.
Lyon's cooks made their name with the bouchon, a small, plain restaurant serving quenelles, andouillette sausage and cervelle de canut, a herbed fresh cheese. The tarte aux pralines is pink and sweet, and the covered market at Part-Dieu sells cheese, charcuterie and pastries. Each December the Festival of Lights fills the squares and windows with candles and projections.
