Cannes curves around a sandy bay on the French Riviera, with a wide seafront boulevard, La Croisette, lined with palm trees and grand hotels. The Palais des Festivals, near its western end, hosts the international film festival each May, and film stars' handprints are set in the pavement outside. The old quarter of Le Suquet climbs a hill above the old port, with narrow lanes, a church and a museum in a medieval castle.
Boats cross to the Lérins Islands: Sainte-Marguerite, with a fort where the prisoner known as the Man in the Iron Mask was held, and Saint-Honorat, home to a monastery and its vineyards. Behind the coast, Grasse, the perfume town, is about half an hour inland, and the red rocks of the Esterel run to the west. Antibes, Nice and Monaco lie along the shore.
The Forville market sells Provençal produce, olives and cheeses, and the port restaurants serve bouillabaisse, grilled sea bream and salade niçoise, with rosé from Provence. Mimosa trees bloom yellow on the hills in late winter. The beaches are at their busiest in July and August.
