Experience the best of Reims
Reims, the city of Champagne, is known for the cathedral where French kings were crowned and for the chalk cellars beneath its champagne houses.

Reims Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece of the thirteenth century, was the coronation church of most French kings, and its façade is covered in statues, including the Smiling Angel. Inside, stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall glow in the apse. Beside it, the Palais du Tau, the former archbishop's palace, holds treasures from the coronations, and the Basilica of Saint-Remi shows earlier Romanesque and Gothic work.
Beneath the city, kilometres of chalk cellars, dug out as quarries and later used to store champagne, are part of a UNESCO site that also takes in the hillsides and the avenue in nearby Épernay. The Roman Mars Gate, Place Drouet-d'Erlon with its cafés, and the Museum of the Surrender, where Germany signed its capitulation in May 1945, round out the city. The Montagne de Reims regional park and the Marne valley vineyards stretch to the south.
Champagne is the obvious order, poured at café tables on Place Drouet-d'Erlon, and the city's pink biscuits, biscuits roses, are traditionally dipped in it. The grape harvest, which usually begins in September, fills the villages around with pickers and presses. The cellars stay cool and damp all year, whatever the weather above.
