Marne-la-Vallée is a planned new town, one of five created around Paris from the 1960s, spread over several communes along the Marne east of the capital. Disneyland Paris, at Chessy, opened in 1992 as Euro Disney, and the neighbouring Val d'Europe grew up beside it with shops, lakes and housing.
The eighteenth-century Château de Champs-sur-Marne stands in formal gardens, and at Noisiel the Menier chocolate factory, whose brick-and-tile mill spans the river, is a landmark of industrial architecture. Lagny-sur-Marne is an old market town on the river. Further east, Meaux and the medieval walled town of Provins give a taste of the Brie countryside.
Brie de Meaux, a soft cheese with a white rind, comes from the farms of the plateau just east, and Meaux is also known for its grainy mustard. The woods and lakes of the new town are pleasant in spring and early autumn, and Paris is a short journey west.
