Experience the best of Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is an elegant university town in Provence, with plane-shaded boulevards, fountains, markets and the hills Cézanne painted.

Aix-en-Provence was founded by the Romans in 122 BC beside hot springs and later became the capital of Provence. The Cours Mirabeau, a broad avenue shaded by plane trees, divides the old town from the newer quarter, with cafés on one side and old mansions on the other, and fountains run in the small squares behind. Thermal springs still feed its baths.

Cézanne was born in Aix and painted the limestone ridge of Mont Sainte-Victoire again and again; his studio, the Atelier Cézanne, is preserved on a hill north of the centre. Markets fill Place Richelme and Place de la Mairie, Saint-Sauveur Cathedral mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque, and the Granet Museum has paintings and archaeology. Marseille lies about thirty kilometres south, with the Calanques coast beyond it.

Aix is known for calissons, diamond-shaped sweets of almond paste and candied melon under a layer of white icing. The cooking leans on olive oil, herbs, tapenade and tomatoes, and local rosé is poured on café terraces. The Festival d'Aix brings opera in July, and the winds of the mistral clear the sky in winter and spring.
