Experience the best of Bordeaux
Bordeaux, on the Garonne in south-west France, is a stone-fronted port city and the centre of one of the world's great wine regions.

The pale limestone façades of the eighteenth century give Bordeaux an elegant, even look, and the curve of the Garonne, the Port of the Moon, is part of its UNESCO listing. Place de la Bourse faces the river, and the Miroir d'eau, a shallow reflecting pool, mirrors it. The Grand Théâtre, Saint-André Cathedral with its separate Pey-Berland tower, and the long pedestrian Rue Sainte-Catherine make up the centre.
The Cité du Vin, a wine museum by the river, tells the story of vineyards around the world. East of the city is Saint-Émilion, a hillside village of limestone cellars and an underground church, while the Médoc, to the north-west, runs past the châteaux of Margaux and Pauillac. The Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, rises at the Arcachon Bay, where oyster farms line the shore.
Canelés, small caramelised cakes with a custard centre, are the local pastry, and oysters from Arcachon are eaten with crépinettes, small grilled sausages, and white wine. Entrecôte à la bordelaise comes with a red wine sauce. The region's reds, blends based on cabernet sauvignon and merlot, suit a mild, damp climate, and the grape harvest in September and October is the high point of the year.
