Experience the best of Versailles

Versailles, west of Paris, is the town built around the palace of Louis XIV, with its Hall of Mirrors and formal gardens.

The Palace of Versailles began as a hunting lodge of Louis XIII, and Louis XIV turned it into the seat of royal power, moving the court here in 1682. Its centrepiece is the Hall of Mirrors, seventy-three metres long, with seventeen mirrored arches facing the garden windows, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919. The royal apartments, the Opera and the Chapel complete the palace.

The gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, spread out in straight avenues, clipped hedges, statues and fountains down to the Grand Canal, a cross-shaped lake where gondolas were once rowed. In the northern part of the park, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon are smaller palaces, and Marie Antoinette's Hamlet, a make-believe village of thatched cottages, sits beside a lake.

In the town, the Notre-Dame covered market sells Brie de Meaux and other produce of the Île-de-France, and the Potager du Roi, the king's former kitchen garden, is still cultivated. Paris is about twenty kilometres east. The gardens are greenest in spring, and the trees turn gold in October.
