Experience the best of Strasbourg
Strasbourg is a city on the Rhine in Alsace, with a half-timbered quarter, a towering Gothic cathedral and the seat of the European Parliament.

The Grande Île, the island in the River Ill at the heart of Strasbourg, is a World Heritage site. Its focus is the cathedral, built of pink sandstone, whose single spire rises 142 metres and was the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874; inside is a large astronomical clock. Nearby, Petite France is a district of half-timbered houses, canals and locks, with the Ponts Couverts, bridges once roofed in wood, and the Vauban Dam.
Alsace changed hands between France and Germany several times, and the street names and architecture of Strasbourg show both. The city is also a seat of the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. The Alsace Wine Route winds through villages to the south-west, Colmar is about an hour south, and the Black Forest begins across the Rhine.
Flammekueche, a crisp thin tart with cream, onions and bacon, choucroute garnie, sauerkraut with sausages and pork, and baeckeoffe, a casserole of meats and potatoes, are the regional classics, served with Riesling, Gewürztraminer or local beer. Christmas markets have been held since the 16th century and fill the squares in December. Autumn brings the grape harvest to the vineyards of the Wine Route.
