Experience the best of Marseille
Marseille, France's oldest city, is a Mediterranean port of old forts, hilltop basilicas and limestone coves, and the home of bouillabaisse.

Greek sailors founded Marseille around 600 BC, making it the oldest city in France. The Vieux-Port is its centre, a long harbour ringed by cafés and the morning fish stalls, guarded by two forts at its mouth. On a hill above, the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde carries a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary and shows the harbour and the islands from its terrace.
Across the harbour, the MuCEM museum is wrapped in a lattice of concrete and linked by a footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean, with the old Le Panier quarter behind. Boats run to the Château d'If, the island prison in The Count of Monte Cristo, and to the Frioul islands. The Calanques, steep white limestone inlets with turquoise water, run east towards Cassis, and Aix-en-Provence lies half an hour to the north.
Bouillabaisse, a fish stew served with rouille and toasted bread, is the city's best-known dish, alongside panisse, fried chickpea sticks, and navettes, boat-shaped biscuits sold at an old bakery. Pastis, the aniseed drink, was created here. The mistral, a strong dry wind from the north-west, can blow for days.
