Experience the best of Le Havre
Le Havre is a major port at the mouth of the Seine, rebuilt in concrete after the Second World War to plans by Auguste Perret and now UNESCO-listed.

Le Havre was founded in 1517 by King François I as a harbour on the Seine estuary and is still one of the main ports of France. Bombing in 1944 flattened the centre, and a team led by Auguste Perret rebuilt it in reinforced concrete on a grid of wide avenues, a modern town that is now a World Heritage site. Saint Joseph's Church, with a lantern tower more than a hundred metres high, anchors the skyline.
The MuMa art museum, a glass-and-steel building on the seafront, has one of the best collections of Impressionist painting outside Paris, and Monet painted Impression, Sunrise from the harbour here in 1872. Le Havre has a long shingle beach and promenade, and the Volcan cultural centre, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, stands beside the old docks. Étretat's chalk cliffs lie to the north, and Honfleur is across the estuary by the Pont de Normandie.
Seafood leads the menus, from mussels and sole to shrimp and mackerel, often in a cream sauce. Normandy cider and calvados come from orchards a short way inland. The Channel weather changes quickly, and the sea wall is the place to watch it come and go.
