Experience the best of Hoi An

Lantern-lit lanes, tailor shops and riverside cafés glow after dark in Hoi An, a beautifully preserved old trading port in central Vietnam.

The Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves centuries-old merchant houses, Chinese assembly halls and temples along the Thu Bon River. The covered Japanese Bridge is its emblem, and old houses such as Tan Ky show the blend of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese influences that shaped the port.

As evening falls, silk lanterns light up the streets and candles float on the river. Tailors make clothes to measure within a day or two, and the central market overflows with produce and food stalls. Bicycles lead out through rice paddies to the vegetable village of Tra Que and to the beaches of An Bang and Cua Dai, and round basket boats spin through the coconut palms of Cam Thanh. The ruined Cham temples of My Son lie in a jungle valley inland.

Cao lau noodles, delicate white rose dumplings and the town's celebrated banh mi are local treats. The dry months from about February to August bring sun and warmth, while autumn is the rainy season, when the river sometimes floods the old streets. Full-moon nights bring a lantern festival to the old quarter.
