Ha Giang is a province on Vietnam's border with China, about 300 kilometres north of Hanoi, a landscape of limestone peaks, deep valleys, rice terraces and winding mountain roads. Ha Giang city, on the Lo River, is the base. The Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark, covers the northern districts, a rocky highland where farmers grow maize in pockets of soil among the stone.
The loop road north climbs through Quan Ba and Yen Minh to Dong Van, an old town with a Sunday market, and passes Lung Cu, the northernmost point of Vietnam, where a flag tower stands on a peak. Ma Pi Leng Pass hugs a cliff above the Nho Que River canyon, one of the most dramatic roads in the country. In Sa Phin, the former mansion of a Hmong chieftain survives. Terraced rice fields at Hoang Su Phi, to the west, glow gold in September.
Ethnic groups such as the Hmong, Dao and Tay live in the villages, each with its own costumes and markets. Local food includes thang co, a stew traditionally made with horse meat, steamed cornmeal called men men, five-colour sticky rice and corn wine. In autumn buckwheat flowers colour the fields pink and white, in spring plum and peach trees blossom, and winters are cold and misty.
