Can Tho sits on the Hau River, a branch of the Mekong, in the heart of the delta, a flat green land of rice fields, orchards and canals. The waterfront promenade at Ninh Kieu is the city's evening meeting place, with a statue of Ho Chi Minh and boats lit at night. Nearby, the Binh Thuy Ancient House, a villa mixing French and Vietnamese styles, and the Khmer and Chinese temples show the delta's mix of peoples.

Cai Rang floating market, a few kilometres from the city, is a gathering of boats at dawn, each hanging samples of its produce from a tall pole. Phong Dien, a smaller floating market, is further out, and boat trips thread through narrow canals shaded by coconut palms to orchards of pomelo, rambutan, durian and dragon fruit. Soc Trang and Chau Doc, with their Khmer and Cham villages, lie in the delta further on.

Delta cooking is sweet and fresh: lau mam, a hot pot of fermented fish with vegetables, banh xeo pancakes, grilled snakehead fish, and elephant ear fish served standing upright, with rice paper, herbs and sweet fish sauce. Tropical fruit is the dessert. Rain falls from May to November, and the dry months from December to April are the sunniest.
