Cat Ba is the largest island of the Cat Ba archipelago in northern Vietnam, at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay, a mass of limestone hills, forest and mangrove. Cat Ba town, a harbour of fishing boats and seafood restaurants, is the main settlement. Much of the island is Cat Ba National Park, home to the golden-headed langur, one of the rarest primates in the world, as well as macaques, squirrels and birds.
Hiking trails climb through the national park to viewpoints over the karst, and Hospital Cave, a three-storey cave complex hidden in the hills, served as a secret hospital in the war. Beaches near the town, including Cat Co 1, 2 and 3, are popular. Boats go out into Lan Ha Bay, where limestone towers rise from emerald water, with floating villages and quiet lagoons. Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago together form a World Heritage site.
Seafood is the island's food: squid, clams, crab, grilled fish and hotpots of shrimp and vegetables are sold at the harbour restaurants, many of them with live tanks. Oysters and sea snails are plentiful. Storms are common in the hot, humid summer.
