Experience the best of Hanoi
Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, mixes lakeside temples, French colonial boulevards and an Old Quarter where street food and scooters fill every lane.

The Old Quarter's narrow streets, each once devoted to a single trade, sit just north of Hoan Kiem Lake, where the red Huc Bridge leads to the Temple of the Jade Mountain. Wander at dawn to see tai chi by the water, or after dark when the pavements fill with food stalls and low plastic stools.
To the west, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum stands on Ba Dinh Square near the One Pillar Pagoda, and the Temple of Literature, home to the country's first national university, is a serene run of courtyards and pavilions. The French Quarter keeps its opera house and tree-lined avenues, West Lake is ringed by cafés and the ancient Tran Quoc Pagoda, and the Hoa Lo Prison and the Museum of Ethnology add depth.
Eating is the city's great pleasure: steaming bowls of pho, bun cha grilled pork with noodles, delicate rice rolls, and egg coffee in hidden upstairs cafés. Autumn is Hanoi's favourite season, when the scent of hoa sữa, the milk flower, drifts through the streets, while summer is hot and wet and winter cool and misty. Hanoi is the natural base for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and the northern mountains.
