Da Lat lies on a plateau at about 1,500 metres in the Central Highlands, where the air is cooler than on the coast and pine forests cover the hills. The French developed it as a hill station in the early twentieth century after Alexandre Yersin explored the plateau in 1893, and villas, a railway station and a pink cathedral recall that time. Xuan Huong Lake, an artificial lake in the town centre, is circled by a walking path.
Bao Dai's summer palace recalls Vietnam's last emperor, and the Crazy House is a surreal building shaped like a giant tree. Datanla and Elephant waterfalls drop in forested gorges, the Truc Lam Zen monastery looks over Tuyen Lam Lake, and the peaks of Langbiang rise north of town. Flower gardens, strawberry and vegetable farms and coffee plantations fill the hills, and Nha Trang's beaches are several hours east.
Bánh tráng nướng, rice paper grilled over charcoal with egg and toppings, is the evening street food, with nem nướng, grilled pork rolls, hot soy milk and artichoke tea, the highland specialities. Strawberries and avocado shakes come from the surrounding farms. Days are mild and nights chilly all year, with a dry season from November to April and afternoon rain between May and October.
