The bay's towering karst islands and islets, many draped in jungle, rise sheer from the water of the Gulf of Tonkin. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is best seen on a cruise, ideally overnight, gliding past formations such as the Fighting Cocks and stopping at floating fishing villages where life is lived on rafts and boats.
Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave, opens into vast chambers of stalactites, and Ti Top Island offers a small beach and a climb to a viewpoint over the bay. Kayaks slip through low arches into hidden lagoons, while neighbouring Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay offer quieter waters with the same dramatic scenery. Cat Ba, the largest island in the area, has a national park of forested hills.
Seafood is the local feast: squid, clams, prawns and fish cooked fresh on board or in harbour restaurants. The bay is reached by road from Hanoi. Spring and autumn bring calmer, clearer conditions; summer is hot with occasional storms, and winter is cool and often misty, giving the islands a mysterious look.
