Experience the best of Hue

Hue, the old imperial capital of Vietnam, lines the Perfume River with a walled citadel, royal tombs and pagodas set among gardens and hills.

The Imperial City, inside the vast moated Citadel, was the seat of the Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam's last emperors. Its gates, palaces and temples, including the Noon Gate and the Hall of Supreme Harmony, form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly restored after heavy damage during the war.

Along the river, the seven-storey Thien Mu Pagoda is the city's emblem, and boats drift upriver toward the royal tombs scattered through the countryside. The tomb of Tu Duc lies in a serene lakeside park, Minh Mang's is classically symmetrical, and Khai Dinh's blends Vietnamese and European styles with glittering mosaic interiors. The busy Dong Ba Market sits on the riverbank near the citadel.

Hue's cuisine, shaped by the royal court, is refined and spicy: bun bo Hue beef noodle soup, crisp banh khoai pancakes and delicate steamed rice cakes. The dry season from about February to August is the most pleasant, while autumn brings heavy rain and occasional floods. The road over the Hai Van Pass to Da Nang and Hoi An is a spectacular journey.
