Phu Quoc lies off Vietnam's south-west coast, close to Cambodia, and more than half of the island is protected as national park, much of it forested hills. The west coast has long sandy beaches such as Long Beach and the sunset views from Duong Dong, the main town, where a night market sells seafood and crafts. Sao Beach, in the south-east, has white sand and calm clear water.

Inland, pepper farms, pearl farms and fish-sauce factories show traditional trades, and Phu Quoc's fish sauce is well known across Vietnam. The An Thoi islands in the south offer snorkelling and diving, a cable car crosses the sea to Hon Thom island, and the old prison near An Thoi recalls the war years. Rare Phu Quoc ridgeback dogs, with a stripe of reversed fur along the back, are a local curiosity.

Seafood is the island's strength: grilled squid, blue crab, sea urchin and fresh herring salad, plus bún quậy fish noodles and wine made from rose myrtle. The dry season from November to April is best for beaches and boats; from May to October there is heavy rain and rough seas.
