Experience the best of Foshan

Foshan, a Guangdong city beside Guangzhou, is the home of Cantonese lion dancing and kung fu, with an ancestral temple, ceramics and an old dragon kiln.

Foshan lies in the Pearl River Delta south-west of Guangzhou, so close that the two cities share a metro line, and it has been a manufacturing town for centuries. The Ancestral Temple, a Taoist temple founded in the Song era and rebuilt in the Ming, has ornate roof ridges of ceramic figures, and the martial artists Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man both came from Foshan.

Shiwan, the ceramics district, produces glazed figurines, and the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, a dragon kiln centuries old, is still fired. Xiqiao Mountain, a scenic hill park with lakes and a giant Guanyin statue, rises to the south-west of the city, and the lion-dance tradition of Foshan is known across the Cantonese world.

Shunde, a district of Foshan, is celebrated across China for Cantonese cooking, with river fish prepared raw or steamed and double-skin milk pudding, and has been named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. The climate is humid, hot in summer and mild in winter.
