Experience the best of Chongqing

Chongqing is a vast hilly city where the Yangtze meets the Jialing in south-west China, known for fiery hot pot, steep streets and a skyline lit at night.

Chongqing spreads across steep hills at the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, so its roads climb and drop, cable cars cross the water, and a monorail line passes through a residential tower. It is one of China's four municipalities under direct central control, and it served as the Nationalist government's capital during the Second World War. Hongyadong, a cliffside complex built in the style of the region's stilted houses, is lit up at night.

Ciqikou, an old river town of stone lanes, teahouses and street food, lies on the western side of the city, and Yangtze cruises through the Three Gorges begin here. About a hundred kilometres to the west, the Dazu Rock Carvings, a World Heritage site, hold thousands of Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian figures cut into cliffs between the 9th and 13th centuries. Wulong Karst, with its natural bridges and sinkholes, is also World Heritage listed.

Hot pot is the signature: a bubbling pot of beef tallow, dried chillies and numbing Sichuan pepper in which diners cook slices of meat and vegetables. Xiaomian, spicy noodles in a chilli sauce, is a common breakfast. Mist wraps the city for much of the year, and summers are fierce and humid.
