Zhangjiajie is a city in north-west Hunan, and its name is also given to the national forest park at its heart, the first national forest park in China. The park belongs to the Wulingyuan scenic area, listed by UNESCO in 1992, where more than three thousand narrow sandstone pillars stand among green forest, some rising 200 metres or more. One tall pillar was renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain after the film.
Cable cars and the Bailong Elevator, built onto the face of a cliff, lift visitors to the plateau. Tianmen Mountain, reached by cableway, has Tianmen Cave, a natural arch in the cliff face, approached by a road of 99 bends. Golden Whip Stream follows a valley floor where wild macaques live, and the Tujia and Miao peoples keep markets and villages in the surrounding hills.
Tujia cooking is hot and smoky, with cured pork, chilli pastes and sanxiaguo, a three-delicacy hotpot, on local menus, as across the rest of Hunan, where chilli is a staple. Mist and cloud fill the gorges for much of the year, which gives the pillars their ink-painting look, and spring and autumn are the usual seasons to visit.
