Experience the best of Guangzhou

Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong on the Pearl River, is the home of Cantonese cooking, with old temples, a colonial-era island and a tall modern skyline.

The Pearl River flows through the city between a skyline led by the 600-metre Canton Tower and neighbourhoods of older low-rise streets. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, with its ornate carvings and ceramic roof figures, shows local Lingnan craft at its best, and the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees has a tall pagoda that dates back centuries. Shamian Island, once a foreign concession, keeps tree-lined streets and European-style buildings.

Yuexiu Park, a large hillside park in the centre, holds the Five Rams statue and a Ming-dynasty tower now used as a museum, while Baiyun Mountain on the northern edge gives walks and views over the city. The twin-spired Sacred Heart Cathedral is built entirely of granite, and the tomb of the Nanyue king displays a jade burial suit more than two thousand years old. Foshan, a centre of kung fu and ceramics, is less than an hour away, and Hong Kong is a short high-speed train ride.

Guangzhou eats with devotion. Morning tea, or yum cha, means pushcarts or menus of dumplings, buns and rice rolls; the rest of the day brings roast goose, wonton noodles, congee, clay-pot rice and herbal soups. Autumn and early winter are dry and mild, spring is damp, and summer is hot, humid and stormy. Flower markets fill the streets before Lunar New Year.
