The Bund, a riverside promenade lined with grand banks and hotels from the early twentieth century, faces the towers of Pudong across the water, among them the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Tower and the twisting Shanghai Tower. The view is at its most dramatic after dark, when both banks light up and river boats glide between them.

In the old city, the rockeries, ponds and pavilions of Yu Garden sit beside a busy bazaar and a zigzag bridge leading to the Huxinting teahouse. The leafy former French Concession is lined with plane trees, villas and cafés, and shikumen lane houses survive in Tianzifang and Xintiandi. Nanjing Road is the famous shopping street, the Shanghai Museum holds ancient bronzes and calligraphy, and Jing'an Temple glitters among office towers.

Shanghai's signature dish is the soup-filled xiaolongbao dumpling, alongside pan-fried shengjian buns, red-braised pork and hairy crab in autumn. Mild spring and autumn days are the most comfortable, and around the lunar new year Yu Garden glows with a festival of lanterns. The canal town of Zhujiajiao and the classical gardens of Suzhou make memorable trips.
