Experience the best of Hangzhou

Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, is a city of lakes and tea hills centred on West Lake, with temples, pagodas and a past as an imperial capital.

Hangzhou grew around West Lake, a shallow, willow-fringed lake ringed by hills, causeways and pagodas that has inspired Chinese poets and painters for centuries and is a World Heritage landscape. The city was the capital of the Southern Song dynasty from the 12th century, and it marks the southern end of the Grand Canal. Boats cross the lake to small islands, and the Su and Bai Causeways are favourite walking routes.

On the hills above, Lingyin Temple is among the largest Buddhist temples in China, beside a rock face carved with Buddhas on Feilai Peak. The Leifeng and Six Harmonies pagodas look over the lake and the Qiantang River, and Xixi Wetland is a marshy park of canals and fishponds on the western edge. Qiandao Lake, a reservoir dotted with islands, and the water towns of the Yangtze delta are within reach.

Longjing tea, a flat green leaf pan-roasted by hand, comes from the terraced hills south-west of the lake, and the villages there serve it freshly picked in spring. Local dishes include West Lake fish in a sweet and sour sauce, Dongpo pork braised until it melts, and shrimp cooked with Longjing leaves. Spring brings the new tea and autumn the scent of osmanthus.
