At the city's heart, the Forbidden City spreads behind vermilion walls, a labyrinth of halls and courtyards that housed the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Tiananmen Square lies to its south, and the hill of Jingshan Park to its north gives the finest view over its golden roofs. The Temple of Heaven, set in a park where locals practise tai chi and dance, is a masterpiece of imperial design.
The Summer Palace unfolds around Kunming Lake with pavilions, bridges and a long painted corridor. Old hutong alleys around Houhai Lake and Nanluoguxiang keep courtyard houses and small bars, and the Lama Temple glows with incense. The Great Wall is within a day's reach, with restored sections at Badaling and Mutianyu and wilder stretches further out, and the Ming Tombs lie on the way.
Peking duck, carved at the table, leads the local menu, alongside dumplings, zhajiangmian noodles and street snacks. Autumn is the loveliest season, with clear skies and golden leaves; spring is pleasant though sometimes windy, summer is hot, and winter is cold and dry.
