Experience the best of Xian

Xi'an, capital of many Chinese dynasties and the start of the Silk Road, is home to the Terracotta Army and intact Ming city walls.

The Terracotta Army, found by farmers digging a well in 1974, stands in vast pits outside the city: thousands of life-size clay warriors, horses and chariots buried to guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. Each figure has its own face, and the scale is staggering.

In the city, the massive Ming-era walls can be walked or cycled all the way around, and the Bell Tower and Drum Tower mark the centre. The Muslim Quarter is a lively warren of food stalls around the tranquil Great Mosque, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built to house Buddhist scriptures brought from India, rises among fountains and gardens. The Shaanxi History Museum holds outstanding artefacts.

Hand-pulled biangbiang noodles, roujiamo meat sandwiches, lamb soup with crumbled flatbread and banquets of dumplings make Xi'an a city for eating. Mild springs and autumns make the best travel seasons, while summer is hot and winter cold and dry. The sacred mountain of Huashan, with its cliffside paths, is a thrilling trip.
