Yangshuo lies on the Li River south of Guilin, where steep conical limestone hills rise straight out of the farmland. West Street, a pedestrian lane of stone paving, is lined with shops, cafés and guesthouses, and the water is a short walk away. Scenery of this kind has been painted in Chinese ink for centuries, and the town has drawn artists and travellers for generations.
Cycling or bamboo rafting along the Yulong River leads through villages, past water buffalo and between the peaks, and Moon Hill, a limestone ridge with a natural arch, can be climbed for a view over the fields. At Xingping, upriver, a bend of the Li that appears on the back of a Chinese banknote is a favourite viewpoint. Cormorant fishing, a traditional method using trained birds, is shown on the river.
Beer fish, river fish stewed with tomatoes, peppers and beer, is the dish of Yangshuo, and Guilin rice noodles are eaten for breakfast across the region. Market stalls sell local fruit. Autumn is clear and dry, spring brings mist and rain to the peaks, and summers are hot and humid.
