Experience the best of Chengdu

Chengdu is the Sichuan capital where giant pandas, tea houses, Three Kingdoms shrines and blazing hotpot define an easygoing western Chinese city.

Chengdu is best known as the home of the giant panda, and a breeding and research base on the northern edge lets visitors watch pandas feeding and climbing. In town, the Wuhou Shrine honours Zhuge Liang and other heroes of the Three Kingdoms period, while Du Fu's Thatched Cottage preserves the garden where the Tang poet lived. Wenshu Monastery and Qingyang Palace are working Buddhist and Daoist temples.

Tea houses are the city's living room, with bamboo chairs in People's Park and along Kuanzhai Alley. An hour or so from the centre, the Dujiangyan irrigation system, built more than 2,200 years ago and still working, and the Daoist mountain of Qingcheng make an easy day. Farther afield, the giant Buddha at Leshan and Mount Emei, both on UNESCO's list, lie to the south-west, and the bronze masks of Sanxingdui are in the north.

Sichuan food is famous for the numbing heat of its peppercorns: hotpot, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and twice-cooked pork are the staples, with sweet glutinous rice cakes for balance. Spring and autumn are mild, summer is hot and muggy, and winter is cool and damp. The basin is often overcast, and light drizzle is common.
