Experience the best of Brighton
Brighton, on the Sussex coast, is a lively seaside city of pebble beach, Regency architecture, a pier and narrow shopping lanes.

Brighton grew from a fishing village into a fashionable resort in the eighteenth century, and in the early nineteenth the Prince Regent, later George IV, rebuilt his seaside villa as the Royal Pavilion, an Indian-style palace with domes and minarets over an interior in Chinese taste. Palace Pier, which opened in 1899, stretches out over the sea with arcades and rides, and the pebble beach, lined with deckchairs and cafés, runs below the seafront promenade.
Behind the front, the Lanes and North Laine are tangles of small streets with independent shops, cafés and record stores, and the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery sits in the Pavilion's grounds. To the east, the white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head rise at the edge of the South Downs National Park, and Lewes, with its castle and steep high street, is a short train ride away.
Fish and chips eaten on the pebbles and seafood from stalls along the beach are the seaside classics, while the city also has a long-established vegetarian scene and sparkling wine from Sussex vineyards. The Brighton Festival fills May with arts, and Pride takes over the seafront in early August.
