Bilbao grew rich on iron ore and shipbuilding, and its industrial riverside has been turned to culture. The Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry and covered in titanium, curves beside the river, with a giant flower-covered dog and a spider sculpture outside. The Fine Arts Museum, in a park nearby, and the Zubizuri footbridge by Santiago Calatrava are other stops.
The Casco Viejo, the old quarter of seven original streets, lies in a bend of the river with the Plaza Nueva, the Santiago Cathedral and the Ribera Market in a curving riverside hall. A funicular rises to Artxanda for city views. Down the estuary, the Bizkaia Bridge at Portugalete, a hanging transporter bridge, is listed by UNESCO, and the Basque coast has beaches at Getxo, the hermitage on the islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, and the town of Gernika.
Pintxos, small plates on slices of bread held with a toothpick, are the way to eat in the old town's bars, alongside bacalao al pil-pil, salt cod in an emulsion of oil and garlic, and marmitako, a tuna stew. Txakoli, a dry sparkling white wine, is poured from a height. Drizzle keeps the hills green, and the Aste Nagusia festival fills the city in August.
