Experience the best of Big Sky

Big Sky lies in the Madison Range of south-west Montana, in the Gallatin Canyon, beneath Lone Peak, a pyramid-shaped summit of 3,400 metres. The community was developed as a resort in the early 1970s, with a ski area around Lone Peak that has since grown to cover several mountains, and two base areas, Mountain Village and Meadow Village. The Gallatin National Forest surrounds the town.

The Gallatin River runs beside the highway through a forested canyon, and the film A River Runs Through It was partly shot on it. Fly-fishing and whitewater rafting are popular in summer, and Ousel Falls is a short walk from town. The Lee Metcalf Wilderness lies nearby. Yellowstone National Park's west entrance at West Yellowstone is about 80 kilometres to the south, and Bozeman, with the airport, is to the north. Elk, moose and bears live in the forests.

Montana beef and bison, trout and huckleberry desserts appear in log-walled lodges, and craft beer is poured everywhere. The ski season runs from about December to April, summer brings hiking and mountain biking, and the quiet weeks in between are for the locals.
