Experience the best of Gardiner

Gardiner is a small Montana town on the Yellowstone River at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park, by a stone arch and near hot springs.

Gardiner sits where the Gardner River flows into the Yellowstone River, on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park in southern Montana. A stone arch, the Roosevelt Arch, stands at the park entrance, built in 1903 and carved with words describing the park as for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. The town is small, with log buildings, a main street and a few restaurants, hemmed in by mountains.

Beyond the arch, the road climbs a few kilometres to Mammoth Hot Springs, where terraces of white travertine are built by hot water, and elk often graze on the lawns. The northern range of the park is wildlife country, with bison, pronghorn and, in the Lamar Valley, wolves. North of town, the Yellowstone River flows through Paradise Valley towards Livingston, with whitewater at Yankee Jim Canyon and trout fishing.

Montana beef, bison burgers, trout and huckleberry desserts are local staples, and the town's cafés and saloons feel like those of an old frontier outpost. Summers are warm and dry, autumn brings the sound of bugling elk, and winters are long and snowy.
