Waikiki's crescent of sand, backed by hotels and the volcanic crater of Diamond Head, is the island's classic image, and the hike to the crater rim gives sweeping views. Downtown Honolulu holds ʻIolani Palace, home of Hawaiʻi's last monarchs, and the memorials at Pearl Harbor, including the USS Arizona Memorial, recall the attack of 1941.
The North Shore is famous for its winter waves at Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline, and for the relaxed surf town of Haleiwa, where shave ice is a must. Hanauma Bay's sheltered reef is a favourite for snorkelling, the windward coast has the turquoise water of Lanikai and Kailua, and the fluted green cliffs of the Koʻolau range have been the backdrop to many films.
Island food mixes traditions: poke, kalua pork, plate lunches, loco moco and sweet pineapple. A luau feast with hula and fire dancing is a classic evening. The climate is warm all year; winter brings bigger surf on the north coast and occasional showers, while summer is drier, with calm seas along the North Shore.
